Hack-Resistant Passwords - Easier Than You Might Think!

Security companies and IT people constantly tell us we should use complex and difficult passwords. However, some research has shown that simple passwords can be used more effectively. If the password is something easy to remember but multiple words, it can be more successful. The work involved in hacking passwords is pretty simple. There are five typical ways used.

  1. Asking: Amazingly the most common way to gain access to someone’s password is to simply ask for it, usually in connection with something else.
  2. Guessing: Most people choose a password that is easy to remember and typically relates to them as a person. Passwords like last name, spouse and children’s names and dates of birth, which are easily developed, are common mistakes.
  3. Brute-Force Attack: A hacker simply attempts to sign in using different passwords. He will use a program that runs a series of letters until the system eventually breaks your password.
  4. Common-Word Attack: This is a simple form of brute-force attack. The hacker will attempt to sign in using a list of common words.
  5. Dictionary Attack: This is the same concept as the common word attack using a full dictionary program of nearly 500,000 words.

Automated programs can handle around 100 sign-in requests per second. This means a simple word like sun could be hacked using the brute-force or common-word attack in less than three minutes. However, if your password includes two common words, hacking time increases to two months. Add a third word and the time increases exponentially to more than 2,000 years.
Some websites require a combination of upper case and lower case letters, while others want you to also add a number. These are effective, but sometimes difficult to remember, and experts don’t advise that you allow your browser to always remember your passwords.

Using Candles Safely

Retail sales of candles have grown at least 700% in the last 10 years, according to the National Candle Association. While candles can create atmosphere and spread soothing aromas, candle fires are responsible for an estimated 23,600 residential fires each year, causing over 1,500 injuries and 165 fatalities.

Candle fires tend to include an element of seasonality. Thirty-five percent of candle sales occur during the winter season and twenty-four percent of all candle fires occur in December and January.

The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) reports that the majority of candle fires occur as a result of error or negligence. Over half of such fires result from placing the candle too close to combustibles, while twenty-one percent of residential candle fires involve an unattended or unsupervised individual. Twelve percent of candle fires occur when the candle user falls asleep. Most candle fires occur in the bedroom, followed by living or family rooms.

The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal developed a program called “Candle Circle of Safety.”

They recommend:
  1. Burn candles inside a 1-foot circle of safety, free of anything that can ignite.
  2. Extinguish candles after use.
  3. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  4. Use a sturdy metal, glass or ceramic candle holder.
  5. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Common sense and caution must be used when burning candles. Following simple safety tips can make the use of candles enjoyable, while preventing a devastating home fire.

Peak Season Inventory: The Solution

Businesses with inventories that fluctuate significantly over the course of a year present an interesting challenge. In many cases a business will experience large peaks in inventory at specific intervals during the year. Some small package policies, such as the Businessowner Policy, or BOP, automatically provide peak inventory coverage, but with some caveats. This unique coverage feature, sometimes found in these smaller package policies, applies only when the chosen business personal property limit is equal to at least 100% of the actual average monthly business personal property values, determined at the time of loss. Also, even if the chosen property limit carried is equal to 100% of the actual average personal property amount, the automatic increase, usually 25% of the chosen business personal property limit, may not be adequate to cover the increase in inventory. There is no extra charge for this coverage and generally the inventories are fairly level for the types of businesses that qualify for these small package policies.

For businesses with inventories that fluctuate significantly, there is an endorsement that will provide an increase in the property limit during the specific intervals chosen. This allows the business to take advantage of paying lower premiums for most of the year, yet having the assurance during those peak intervals that the business will have enough coverage. This approach is a practical solution for the business with predictable inventory increases at specific times. The policyholder determines the amount of limit increase and the interval for which it applies. This can include multiple peak intervals and different peak inventory levels. It can be difficult in some cases to determine when these peak intervals occur, so the policyholder should be certain to include an adequate number of days both before and after the peak interval.  Contact us with any questions or concerns - we're here for you.

Reichley Insurance Agency Is Ready for Fall!

A HUGE Thank-You to Girl Scout Troop 30933 from Main Elementary in Beavercreek, Ohio.   Our normally plain side windows are now properly decorated for the season!

The girls from Troop 30933 spent an afternoon creating a delightful Autumn/Halloween scene.  Stop by and see the artwork of Elizabeth, Brenna, Cami, Maddie, Allison, Mackenzie and Olivia, along with that of their co-leaders, Kelly Zelinskas and Katrina Frye.

This yearly tradition of giving back to the Beavercreek community by brightening up local businesses is much appreciated – not to mention a lot of fun!   Thanks, Troop 30933!
